Hola :)
Welcome to my website! I’m Félix Fonseca Quesada, a PhD candidate in Linguistics at Stony Brook University, where I work under the supervision of Dr. Lori Repetti and Dr. Marie Huffman.
My research lies at the intersection of phonetics, phonology, second language acquisition, and experimental approaches to speech. I am particularly interested in how speakers perceive, produce, and acquire new sound patterns in a second language. More broadly, I examine how fine phonetic detail interacts with abstract phonological structure, and how language experience shapes speech learning across languages.
Before joining Stony Brook in 2021, I completed two degrees in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at the University of Costa Rica, Western Campus.
I am a proud Costa Rican 🇨🇷
In Spanish, my name is pronounced [ˈfeliks], though the English pronunciation [ˈfilɪks] is perfectly fine too.
News!
I officially have a date for my dissertation defense — stay tuned! 🎉
I recently presented at the Current Approaches to Spanish and Portuguese Second Language Phonology (CASPSLaP) 2026 conference at Brigham Young University in Utah. You can view my slides under the Conference Presentations section in the Research tab.
My article on consonant clusters and rhotic variation in Costa Rican Spanish was recently published! Feel free to check it out under the Research tab.
